A Little Help Please

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you know I love Hydrangeas. Yesterday while moving piles of stuff around in the sewing room (otherwise known as cleaning) I came across these log cabin blocks. When I first made them I had an idea in mind for a quilt, but once I paired it with a few hour glass blocks I didn’t like the look. So fast forward to yesterday, I stitched the blocks together end to end thinking they will make a lovely table runner. Here’s where I need the help, I can’t decide on borders.

Border B

Ok, what do you think? Should I use A (the single striped border) or B ( the stripe and Hydrangea print) ?

Enjoy your Passover and Easter !

What’s Working on Wednesday

Today I’m actually trying to finalize my menu for Easter. My DD is bringing two of her room mates home for dinner.

I did manage to finish this pink and green quilt. It’s now available in my Etsy shop.

The crochet pattern I tested has gone live so I thought I’d give you a peek. It still needs blocking.

This is a picture of the shawl before the contrasting border was added. I will post a picture in the future of the completed shawl.

I’m sorry to have to do this, but after weeks and weeks of putting up with those disgusting Anonymous comments I have turned on word verification. I hope I will be able to turn it off real soon!

What’s Working on Wednesday

I worked on my polka dot quilt made with Spot On fabric most of the day on Saturday. I found a small white on white polka dot to use in the side and corner triangles. I love setting blocks on point. The thing I don’t like is figuring out the measurements for the triangles. That’s why I use this book for reference. Or this book by Fons and Porter.

I also worked these Leaders and Enders in while piecing the rows of my quilt. They are additional blocks for an idea I started for last years Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

On Friday I also finished the borders on the pink and green Riley Blake quilt. I’d like to get it quilted this week.

In the evenings I have been testing a crocheted shawl pattern for a designer on Ravelry.

And one last thing, I am so happy today is the first day of Spring. I’m really sick of the ugly dark pictures I’ve had to post because we can’t seem to find the sun! So HAPPY FIRST DAY OF SPRING!!!!!!

Scrap Happy Saturday and a Winner

Well I finally have something to show for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. I made these mostly orange blocks for last years challenge. I just got around to quilting them and I hope to finish with a nice binding today. After all it is National Quilting Day so what else would I do? What are you doing today? Quilting with friends or maybe visiting the Lancaster Quilt Show. Whatever you’re doing, have fun!

                 photo (99)

I also finished this little scrap mini. These blocks were made before I started blogging. So they’ve been around awhile.

What’s Working on Wednesday

Today, well yesterday I started working on a quilt made with Song Bird by Carina Gardener for Riley Blake. Lots of pretty pinks and greens. I started with one small charm pack (21 charms) and 4 fat quarters.

                      photo (98)

So today I plan to put two borders on. A narrow (about 1”) border and then maybe a 4” or more border. The narrow border will be a small white on white print. The larger border is going to be the large flower print that’s in the body.

We had a little sun today so I got to snap this picture really fast before the wind carried it away!

If you haven’t entered the giveaway, there’s still time. Check it out here.

What’s Working on Wednesday

Today I thought I’d share with you my favorite way to make a pieced backing. It’s what was working yesterday when I realized my fabric was a little too short.

First take your length of fabric and make sure the ends are even.

            photo (10)

Then choose whatever fabric you’d like to add to make the length you need. This could be a single piece of fabric, blocks sewn together or different fabrics sewn together. I chose this strip of batik fabric. We will call this the addition from now on.

             photo (97)

Next take your addition and sew it to one end of your backing fabric.

             photo (96)

Next sew the addition to the other end of your length of fabric forming a tube.

                photo (15)

                photo (14)

Now you can chose where you’d like the addition to end up in your pieced backing. Near the top, or the bottom, even centered. Wherever, pick a spot and cut your tube open so you again have one length of fabric.

                photo (11)

Now you have a great pieced backing all ready for your quilt. This works for larger sized quilts as well.

Spring?

Meteorologist consider March 1st the beginning of the Spring season. If you live in the Northeast and you’ve been looking at ugly gray/brown gardens and cloudy skies, I know you’re happy to hear that. I for one can not wait for the flowers to start popping up.

                  Creations 270

So last night I brought Spring to the sewing room. I pulled out some floral prints and coordinating pieces in lavender, aqua, fuchsia and green and my GO! baby started working on these Whirligig blocks.
